Celebrities often have the huge responsibility of making their image clean at all times. After all, they are considered “public figures” that most people would look up to. In effect, much of what is happening in their lives can be easily scrutinized by the public eye, most of which are easily available via social media and other sources of information.
Most of us do not immediately realize that these celebrities are human, too. The only difference is they have more money and popularity than average people. They eat and drink whatever they want, shop for clothes, enjoy their lives, and make mistakes, too.
Speaking of committing mistakes, no one is exempt from the consequences of their actions regardless of whatever that is. Through the years, many celebrities went through several issues that not only affected their careers but also their personal lives. With that said, here are some of the most shocking celebrity scandals of the decade that shook the whole sports and entertainment industry:
Shocking Celebrity Scandals – From 2008 to 2018
Tiger Woods was once the “golden man of golf”, having won several professional wins in the said sport. However, all of these recognitions will be swept under the rug following the revelation of his infidelities. Apparently, Woods suffered from “sex addiction”.
In 2009, it was found that Woods had been cheating on his then-wife, Elin Nordegren, with not one but several numbers of women. As a result, he and Nordegren divorced in 2010, and his professional golf career was not able to keep up since then.
The two R&B artists once have been a powerhouse couple, until a violent incident happened on February 8, 2009. Apparently, the couple got into a heated argument the night before the Grammy awards. The said argument led Brown to physically assaulting his then-girlfriend, Rihanna.
As a result of the violent encounter, the latter suffered several contusions and bruises which needed hospitalization. Meanwhile, Brown was charged with assault, with five years’ probation and more than 1,400 hours of community service. The two had since moved on with their respective career and personal lives.
One of the greatest pop divas that ever lived, Whitney Houston’s sudden death caught the world by surprise. Her lifeless body was found in a bathtub at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on February 11, 2012.
No one knew exactly what caused her death until an autopsy report revealed that the singer died due to traces of cocaine found in her body, which led to her accidental drowning. Other substances were found in her body according to the said report including marijuana, Xanax, and Benadryl, but apparently did not contribute to her cause of death.
Lance Armstrong was considered one of the most successful athletes of all time, apart from the fact that he surpassed testicular cancer once. His career downfall, however, began following incessant accusations against him taking dope, apparently to enhance his performance.
After repeatedly denying the spreading rumors of him taking performance-enhancing drugs, Armstrong finally admitted his substance use in August 2012. After his shocking announcement, the USADA stripped him of his awards and imposed a lifetime ban on him on the sport.
He was also dropped by several brands as their endorser. He also stepped down as chairman of LIVESTRONG, a foundation he set up for cancer research, on November of the same year.
Known for her self-titled TV show in her younger days, Amanda Bynes turned out to be a troubled individual back in 2012. For one, she was arrested for driving under the influence (DUI). Following the incident, she tweeted then-US President Barack Obama to fire the cop who arrested her.
Since then, Bynes showed odd behavior in public, including her disturbing social media posts, appearing in loud-colored wigs, tweeting Drake asking him to “murder” her private parts, and threatening to sue media outlets. Thankfully, she has since received treatment and has been proudly sober for more than 3 years.
“Glee” star Cory Monteith, who played the role of Lea Michele’s love interest, Finn Hudson, was found dead in a hotel room in Vancouver, Canada on July 12, 2013. According to the autopsy report, Monteith died due to a fatal mix of drugs, particularly heroin, and alcohol. Ultimately, his death was declared an accident.
Of course, his colleagues in Glee were devastated with the news, especially his on and off-screen partner, Michele. In 2011, he opened up with his substance abuse struggles and spent some time in rehab in 2013.
Lovato has indeed gone a long way since her Disney days. Despite her musical success, she has long struggled with substance abuse. In one of her interviews, she even admitted smuggling cocaine during airplane trips. She also shared that she cannot stand at least 30 minutes without using cocaine.
Her turning point came when she was about to go in a Los Angeles-bound airplane. Apparently, she was able to sneak vodka by filling it into a soda bottle. After suffering from vomiting bouts, she realized that she is becoming “one of those people” who had “alcoholic behavior.” Thankfully, she went to several treatments and is slowly but surely fighting her inner struggles.
Unfortunately, she relapsed on July 24, 2018, as she suffered a drug overdose. Initial reports claimed the singer-songwriter had a heroin overdose, but it was later revealed that she OD on opioid. Demi had to stay in the hospital for more than a week due to complications including high fever and extreme nausea.
Amy Winehouse was beginning to make a name for herself in the music industry, having a critically-acclaimed album, Back to Black, which was released in 2006. She also won several Grammy awards during her lifetime. Despite her musical success, she was actually struggling with personal issues which ultimately led to her sudden death in 2011.
When she and her ex-husband Blake Fielder-Civil divorced, she went into rehab to sober up from her drug and alcohol use. The morning on the day of her death, Andrew Morris, Winehouse’s bodyguard, saw her lying in bed and appeared to be asleep.
However, when he checked on her room hours later, she was not breathing anymore. It was too late to save her and was declared dead on the spot. It was reported that the cause of her death is “accidental alcohol poisoning.”
Best known for his legendary performance as Joker in “The Dark Knight”, Heath Ledger seemed to have captivated the movie goers’ hearts with his memorable performances. Unfortunately, his blossoming career status was cut short due to his untimely demise.
On January 22, 2018, Ledger was found dead in his Manhattan home. According to reports, Ledger’s sudden death was due to the “abuse of prescribed medications.” Apparently, he took medications to treat his insomnia.
Williams was considered one of the best actors of all time, having memorable lead roles in “Dead Poets Society”, “Patch Adams”, and “Mrs. Doubtfire”, to name a few. Despite his career success, Williams shared his personal struggles with substance abuse, alcoholism, and depression throughout his life.
He entered rehab in 2006 to treat his addiction and mental health issues. In 2009, he underwent heart surgery which is said to have greatly affected him personally. Despite his initiative to do something about his personal issues, the latter seemed to have defeated the actor. On August 11, 2014, he was found dead in his home as a result of an apparent suicide.
At the end of the day, celebrities go astray at some point in their lives, just like the rest of us. However, some of them did not end up well and departed from the world sooner than we thought.
While many of them struggled with their personal issues, some chose to seek help. You can find luxury rehab all throughout the country that can help with mental health or addiction issues. Whether a celebrity or an ordinary citizen, everyone has the right to choose to steer from the wrong path of desolation to a life full of meaning and purpose.happy wheels
