Manchester United suffered a disappointing 3-1 defeat to rivals Manchester City on Sunday that leaves them 12 points behind the league leaders.
Alexis Sanchez had to settle for a spot on the bench and was only introduced on 73 minutes along with Romelu Lukaku.
Mourinho has been brutal with his team selections this season with the likes of Sanchez, Lukaku and summer signing Fred all having to endure time on the bench.
The Portuguese boss opted to start a youthful trio consisting of Jesse Lingard, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial to lead his side’s attack against Pep Guardiola’s champions.
But it seems Mourinho’s decision to bench Sanchez has had huge ramifications with the Chilean finally running out of patience.
According to the Daily Star, the 29-year-old is now determined to quit the club in January as a result of missing out on a starting berth at the Etihad.
Sanchez only joined United from Arsenal in January with the Red Devils agreeing to pay his £500,000-a-week wages.
He was told he would be one of Mourinho’s star players and be guaranteed regular starts.
That promise was part of the reason he chose United over City, fearing he would be used on a rotation basis at the Etihad.
Only last month, Mourinho was seemingly on the brink of losing his job after a run of disappointing results.
But with the former Chelsea boss recording an impressive 2-1 win over Juventus in the Champions League earlier this month and the board willing to back him, Mourinho doesn’t appear to be on his way out anytime soon.
That’s left Sanchez determined to force his way out of his long-term contract with the club when the transfer window reopens in the New Year.
Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain have both been linked with a move for forward, who has netted only four goals for United since joining.
The two European giants would have no trouble meeting his wage demands but will have to weigh up their need to strengthen in other areas before potentially making a move for the former Barcelona man.
Only last month, Mourinho spoke openly about Sanchez’s struggles at Old Trafford, and believes injuries have played a huge part in him trying to find his feet.
“He arrived in January last season – I don’t think that is ever an easy situation for a player,” he said.
“But this season he had a good start. He had a good preseason and he started well against Leicester. Then he was injured. Then he came back and then he was injured again.
“So he is struggling with his condition and I think he is the kind of player that needs to really sharp to play his best game.”
Sanchez will be hoping to return to the starting XI when United host Crystal Palace on Saturday, November 24, after the international break.
