Belly fat is not the easiest part of the body to get into shape. It may be inconvenient when it comes to squeezing into your favourite pair of jeans, but having fat around your middle can indicate a serious health problem.
Body mass index (BMI), which is weight relative to height, is used to categorise adults as underweight, normal weight, overweight or obese. But BMI does not account for the amount and distribution of fat and muscle.
Central obesity is a store of excess fat around the middle of the body and is a marker of abnormal fat distribution.
According to Dr Dawn Harper, Gloucestershire GP and Consultant GP to Healthspan, the health risks associated with being overweight depend not just how much extra weight you are carrying but also where that weight is stored on your body.
Carrying extra fat on your belly is more damaging in terms of your health than fat carried on your hips or elsewhere on your body
Dr Dawn Harper
She said: “Carrying extra fat on your belly is more damaging in terms of your health than fat carried on your hips or elsewhere on your body because it is known to increase the risk of heart disease, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and some types of cancer.”
But there is a simple way to find out if you are at risk and that is to measure your waist.
Dr Harper explained: “Measure with a tape measure at a point midway between the bottom of your ribs and the top of your hips.
“Men with a waist measurement of 94cm (37in) or more and women with a waist measurement of 80cm (31.5in) need to lose weight and NHS Direct recommend that men with a waist measurement of 102cm (40in) and women with a waist of 88cm(34in) should contact their GP for professional advice.”
Belly fat is not the easiest part of the body to get into shape
Experts on the BBC’s The Truth About Obesity, back in April, revealed a similar method of how to tell if you’re storing too much fat around your middle, using a piece of string.
Dr Margaret Ashwell said start by cutting a piece of string to the length of your height.
The next step, is to fold the piece of string in half and wrap it around your middle.
If the two ends of the string struggle to meet, your visceral fat level – body fat stored within the abdominal cavity – is too high.
A study revealed its negative impact on you heart, no matter how overweight you are.
This is because visceral fat wraps around organs, such as the pancreas and liver, and raises your risk of major health problems.
Start your morning with a fruit smoothie
According to Dr Ashwell, measuring your height to waist ratio can get a good indication of the level of visceral fat you are carrying.
On the show she said: “BMI doesn’t measure fat distribution. The best way of explaining it is think of a great hunky rugby player, they might have the same BMI as a chubby darts player.
“The rugby player might have more muscle than fat, where as a dart player is going to have more fat than muscle.”
Visceral fat is different to the fat which can be pinched around the middle called subcutaneous fat, which sits below the surface of the skin.
But the good news is experts argue visceral fact can be shed faster than the spare tyre.
Claire Barnes, nutritional therapist, said following these tips can help you banish the fat in your body, which few people are aware of.

Eat fewer refined carbohydrates
Foods like bread, biscuits, sweets and cakes will convert to glucose in the body and get stored as fat if not burnt off through exercise.
Claire said: “Ditch the sandwiches, and make salads, containing lentils or chickpeas.”
Snack on healthy proteins
Start the day with poached eggs, porridge with seeds and nuts or a smoothie with added nut butter, advised Claire.
“If you need a snack, pick something that contains protein, such as dried fruit and nuts, or carrots with hummus,” said Claire.
“Eat healthy proteins such as grass-fed organic meats, cold-water fish or vegetable proteins, such as lentils and beans. These can all be used as energy sources for the body as well as providing essential nutrients.”
