Human Chorionic Gonadotropin or HCG – a hormone produced by human placenta during pregnancy, is known for its fat burning properties and therefore used for losing weight. It also acts as pro-hormone that helps in improving any hormonal deficiency within a body that causes weight gain.
An HCG diet (references: 1,2,3) is considered to be an ‘extreme’ diet that involves a total intake of less than 500- 800 calories /day combined with HCG shots or injections on a daily basis for at least 8 weeks.
HCG injections are recommended since it raises the blood levels of HCG and reduces appetite.
Though the hormone may be consumed in the form of HCG drops, pellets or sprays, they are not as effective as the injections, since they get dissolved much before reaching the bloodstream.
Unlike other weight loss programs, there are some strict rules to be followed in case of HCG diet.
First of all, it requires you to eat ‘selectively’ and follow a low-carb diet. You need to consume NOT more than one vegetable, one protein, single slice of bread and one fruit per meal.
Asparagus, celery, cucumbers, beet greens, onions, spinach, tomatoes, red radishes, cabbage are some of recommended vegetables. Protein may constitute of grilled/broiled beef, veal or chicken, fresh fish, lobster, crab or shrimp. Seafoods that are high on mercury, such as salmon, tuna, herring, eel, dried or pickled fish are NOT allowed. You can have tea, coffee with just 1 tsp of milk, along with plenty of water.
HCG diet involves no exercises or extreme physical activities (which is good news for those who are unable to work out or are lazy bums). You are also prohibited from using any body products such as oils or lotions, during the entire diet period.
The diet displays remarkable weight loss results, as much as losing up to a pound per day.
Having said that, following a strict HCG diet is not at all easy and involves a lot of willpower as well. Despite this, people from all parts of the world are willing to take it up, including the well known.
For celebrities specially, presenting themselves globally requires them to maintain a persona, and constantly build and retain their popularity. This also includes their physical attributes. Staying in shape and maintaining a fit body is extremely important for their professions, especially if they belong to the media, film or fashion industry.

In spite of the results, most people still believe that the low-calorie diet alone is accountable for such dramatic weight losses and it has nothing to do with ‘HCG’. Few aren’t even sure about the HCG dosage they should be taking.
Understand that when you follow an extreme low-cal diet, the energy required by a body reduces, which slows the metabolic process. The body then starts using its stored internal energy for daily functioning and survival, and ends up metabolizing its own muscles to preserve energy. This leads to muscle loss.

Gwyneth Kate Paltrow, food writer and a mother of two, endorses the importance of sticking to a diet and exercise routine. According to her, people should boost their metabolism while toning their muscles, and detoxify once a while in order to heal their bodies faster.
Actress Kate Hudson had once said, “I do want to get healthy. I don’t want to keep the weight on like that. I don’t want to get discouraged ”. She was known to have lost 60 pounds in just a couple of months by consuming smaller meal portions throughout the day. Her diet plan consisted more of proteins and selected carbohydrates, along with at least 2-3 hours of daily workouts.
Jennifer Aniston too was pretty much in news for trying out several weight loss programs, before resorting to a strict diet plan consisting majorly of vegetables, vitamins and lean proteins. Her dedication to lose weight quickly was such that even her cheat days included Kale chips!
Dieters may experience tremendous amount of food cravings during the first phase of starting the HCG program, but the hunger pangs usually subside within the following week. Even then, for some this diet may be difficult to continue or not all that fulfilling. It’s important to know that ‘what works for one may not be apt for the other’.
If you are willing, then there are several weight loss programs that you can choose as per your body requirements. Usually, most of these programs constitute of portioned low-calorie, low-carb diet, along with plenty of water to flush out the toxins. In fact, the whole idea of weight loss is to burn more calories than you eat.
The programs also recommend at least thirty minutes to one hour of physical activities, such as cycling, brisk walking, jogging, yoga etc. However, a lot of people struggling to work-out either due to lack of time, physical disabilities or medical constraints, generally tend to include fat burning dietary supplements and superfoods, in order to boost up their weight loss process.
Weight loss is all about hard work and determination. With dynamic lifestyles, maintaining healthy weight is tough, while losing is even tougher. Needless to say, holding onto those extra calories is paving way to chronic health hazards.
