2018 became another land marker for Beyoncé after she became the first-ever Black female headliner at California’s high-powered annual music festival, Coachella.
Dominating the first weekend with the fan-coined “BeyChella” performance, Queen Bey served Black history pride and signature dance mastership to captivate her devout BeyHive. One of the most momentous parts of the latter was her surprise routine to Atlanta rapper O.T. Genasis’ “Everybody Mad,” a record that’s, essentially, a reminder to keep the haters on their toes. The performance was as much a surprise to him as it was to the rest of Coachella-goers, who watched Bey hit bold moves to the aggressive hip-hop banger.
BET Digital spoke with the Long Beach-native to discuss what being a part of a Beyoncé historical moment actually feels like.
How did you find about the Queen Bey including “Everybody Mad” in her set? Were you watching or did the BeyHive bring it to your attention?
O.T. Genasis: I was actually on the road and just got through doing a show and my texts were going crazy. Everybody was talking about Beyonce and Coachella and everything, and I’m like ‘What?’ So, I’m already excited. I watched [Instagram] and saw everything there. You know I was happy as hell when I saw that! I was turned [up].
Have you seen any other celebs vibing out to it?
O.T. Genasis: I’m sure there’s a few, but not that I’ve seen myself. Beyonce [dancing to the song] is really all I need [laughs.]
This was Bey’s historical performance as the first Black female headliner for Coachella. What does that mean to you for her to have performed your new single in this moment of history?
O.T. Genasis: All I can say is that I’m blessed. There’s not too much that you can say about that because it’s a big ‘Wow!’ I can just say that I’m blessed, man. I’m happy she did that, and it meant a whole lot. I was just talking about how she has the band there, and you have to actually tell the band what to play, how to play it, and be fine with that. So, I’m thinking to myself that she had to actually really like this song to do that. It’s just dope for a Black queen. It’s amazing for me to be a part of that.
What would an OT and Beyonce collabo sound like in the future?
O.T. Genasis: That would be lit! That would be so lit. We would have to meet each other in the middle. It wouldn’t be too much Bey, it wouldn’t be too much O.T. It would definitely be an O.T. and a Bey hybrid. I would love to do something like that.
