The Brexit wave does not seem to be settling down especially when it comes to the defence and trade policy in Europe. After saying that “UK must pay the price for brexit”– the President of France, Francis Hollande, has cleared much about the current situation in an interview.
In a latest interview, the French president Francis Hollande , has made it clear that Britain will not be able to get the perks and privileges of EU membership after leaving the union. In a clear statement, he said that this (EU membership benefits) is not possible and UK would become an outsider.
In an interview with leading newspapers of Europe, he mentioned that he regrets Britain’s decision to leave the union but France firmly holds its position that UK could not get the fruits of membership after exit.
Francis is also preparing to hold a summit in Versailles in which the post brexit future of Europe will be discussed with all leaders.
The Britain government will trigger the article 50 of Treaty of Europe in coming weeks but, British officials and leaders are planning to manage a deal for financial services and for a trade pact that could benefit the England’s interest.
The Trump effect after came under discussion during the interview as Hollande mentioned the Trump government and said that UK problems is, it thinks to make more convincible strategic partnership with US after brexit but as for now, US wants to distance itself from world so probably, Britain’s has made a bad choice at the moment and he regrets British decision.
In the summit, Hollande will host the leaders of Germany, Spain and Italy in Versailles for the 60th anniversary of Treaty of Rome. All the countries want to secure their interest while the major issue would be of France and Germany as both nations fund the most of defense funding and after UK exit, the security flaw would be a great threat especially for the nations along the border with Russia.
In Poland– In the name of a military exercise; NATO has placed US troops and Tanks — the move has angered the Russia but still the Europe is skeptic about the American role in possible threat to Europe.
Without the inclusion of UK, the celebration will take off on 25th of March and the future of Europe would be declared after Brexit.
These days, analysts and critics have put their head together to sort out the possible solutions for re shaping the bloc after Brexit shocks.
In the interview, Hollande also put light on the option of multi speed Europe – in which different nations will integrate at different levels. This multi speed idea was rejected in earlier phase but can become a reality according to Hollande. Hollande also warned that if multi speed Europe’s idea could not become a real situation, EU can break.
On the issue of defense, he said that France would stress for integrated European security policy, which UK has strongly opposed in last decade. According to French President, doors are still open for UK – as the military ties between both nations are very close and Hollande also said that UK should link with integrated European defense policy project.
Francis wants UK to be a part of European defense even after the Brexit.
France is also using the Trump phenomenon to convince Europe for closer defense ties. In the interview, he mentioned trump vision for defense and said that Trump’s suggestion that US should disengage itself from international arena and defense cooperation, has given a new momentum for closer defense of bloc.
He warned that Europe should not rely on any outside power that might leave it in submissive role.
On the question that whether Trump worried him, he said it’s not something about emotions or fear but a political reality for next four years.
He said that Trump’s line of action is isolationism, protectionism, close on immigration and dodging budget rules. He called him ignorant about Europe and said this means, we must prove EU’s political cohesion and strategic autonomy.
In May, Hollande will leave the office and in his final weeks, he is putting his position at stake to define the Europe’s future and he also believes that he would not “give in to despair” that the EU was in crisis.
On the questions of his future plan and speculations that he has a desire to hold a credible European post, he cleared the dilemma ad said that currently he is the president of France and will be till May, which is his only task and focus.
The nationalist parties that don’t want to see Europe in current shape are a clear threat to Europe’s integrity.
Even in France- Marine Le Pen – a front nationalist leader, who does not want to see France in EU bloc, has clear chances to reach the presidential race finals in April and May.
Le Pen has promised to hold a referendum on France’s exit from Europe.
On the question of internal threat to European’s security like the rise of Marie Le Pen, he said that the threat exists and they were never been to this high position since last 30 years but France will not give in.
He further illustrated his answer and said that people in France are aware that the election result would not affect the France future but the Europeans’ future as well. He took a jibe at all the populists and said that they share the idea of leaving Europe, close the border and a future surrounded by barriers and border under watch towers. He said his duty is to stop France to being a part of such project.
It seems that unlike Germany – France does not care to see a Europe with UK at any cost. Also, Germany and France would make the table talks difficult for UK as any relaxation can cause further unrest and some nations that don’t much rely on Europe, shall call for similar referendum.
