Celebs Who Had Cosmetic Dentistry
Everyone wants that Hollywood smile with the bright, clean, straight teeth. We see it flashed from magazine pages, TV, and the big screen all the time.
But as we know, few people — if any — are really born with such perfect teeth. A whole lot of time, money, effort, and skill went into making most of those memorable smiles.
There are a lot of options when it comes to cosmetic dentistry. Teeth whitening is the most obvious and most common. Sit in a dentist’s chair for an hour or so and there you go, brighter, whiter teeth.
Braces, that fear of every teenager, are becoming increasingly popular in adults. There are lots of discreet, clear options appearing on the market for public professionals to straighten their teeth without a mouth full of metal.
You can get veneers, which cover the front of your teeth. They’re usually used to cover chipped front teeth.
There are crowns, which cover one of your back teeth to cover chips and cracks. They also stop the tooth from breaking any further than it already has.
You can get your gum cut back around the edges of your teeth to make them appear bigger and prevent gummy smiles. Sound unpleasant? These days they can do it with a laser, leaving very little mess and downtime.
You can even replace a missing tooth with a dental implant. The root of the tooth gets swapped for a titanium screw and a porcelain tooth is fixed to the top.
So who’s had work done, and what did they get?
Last year Katie Price revealed she spent £95,000 on fixing her teeth. It wasn’t just for cosmetic reasons: she says she fell off a skateboard and cracked her teeth. To get it fixed, she saw a dentist in America who charged USD $150,000 to fix them with veneers.
Now her teeth are straight and perfect, but it’s not without its downsides. To get the veneers to stick, dentists have to shave the original tooth down. The veneer is then usually so smooth you can’t really take big bites out of things.
Price herself has said she can’t take a bite out of an apple or even bite sellotape to break a piece off.
The British X-Factor judge didn’t always have her even pearly whites. Her early reality TV days reveal the singer’s natural teeth to be uneven in both length and space, whereas today they’re all fairly uniform.
Most likely this was achieved with judicious use of veneers, like most of the stars on this list. They’re great not just to cover cracks and chips, but fill and even out otherwise healthy teeth for a more orderly appearance.
Another X-Factor lady, another case of cosmetic dentistry! The singer who rose to fame on the British reality series didn’t have the most photogenic smile when she started out. Her teeth were awkwardly shaped and unevenly spaced.
By the looks of it, a liberal application of veneers and teeth whitening seem to have given her the bright, flashy smile she enjoys today.
Tom Cruise has the classic Hollywood smile, with a mouth full of perfect teeth. Anyone who’s seen older photos of him, though, knows he’s spent an awful lot of time and money to get there.
When comparing Tom’s before and after photos, you can see a number of procedures that got done. There was teeth whitening, obviously. A course of orthodontics straightened out some misaligned teeth, particularly a snaggly front tooth.
Today word has it he then went and got a full mouth full of veneers to really bring it all home and keep everything picture-perfect.
Considering how much Katie Price’s work cost, we dread to think how much cash Cruise dropped on making his smile more presentable.
Nicolas Cage seems like a pretty crazy guy. The movie star has been in some absolute classic films, but also some really, really bad ones. His performances range from brilliant to atrocious, and he always seems just a little off. It should come as no surprise, then, that he has a pretty whacky dental history.
Cage voluntarily has two of his teeth pulled in 1984 for the film “Birdy”. Once he started picking up leading man roles it was time to upgrade the teeth. He now features a full set of pearly whites, likely thanks to some crowns, dentures, or even implants.
After Good Will Hunting, Ben Affleck was an actor in high regard. He landed his first major role in a major Hollywood production with Armageddon, and with it, a new smile.
Director Michael Bay, on seeing Ben Affleck’s small, unevenly-spaced teeth, immediately sent him to a cosmetic dentist. He didn’t believe Affleck was credible as an “heroic leading man” with his original teeth, so production spent USD $20,000 to give Affleck a mouth full of veneers.
While other celebs on this list have likely shelled out the money themselves, this is one case of a serious work perk.
The international pop star has come along way since her days on Hannah Montana. For this article, though, we’re just looking at her teeth.
To transform from her gummy smile full of baby teeth to her new Hollywood smile, a lot of work would have been needed. A course of orthodontic treatment to properly align the teeth, whitening, and veneers are all pretty standard.
What’s interesting, though, is that it looks like she also had her gum line reshaped. This would allow room for the larger, fuller-looking veneers to properly fill the mouth and not look out of place.happy wheels
