McGregor will make his long-awaited return to mixed martial arts two weeks on Saturday in the main event of UFC 229, which takes place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on October 6.
Welcoming the Irishman back to the cage will be Nurmagomedov, his successor at the summit of the lightweight division.
The pair’s showdown has been nearly two years in the making and became the most desired fight in MMA in April after UFC 223 media day, where McGregor attacked a bus carrying Nurmagomedov in retaliation to an altercation the champion had with his good friend Artem Lobov.
McGregor and Nurmagomedov came face-to-face with one another for the first time since that unsavoury incident this evening at Radio City Hall in New York for the first UFC 229 pre-fight press conference.
And as usual, McGregor was in fine form.
“Domination. His head bouncing off the canvas. All his pony talk is going to be put on blast on October 6,” McGregor said when asked for his prediction for the fight.
“As long as it takes, I believe one (round). He’s a glass jaw,” he added when asked which round he thinks he’ll end the fight.
“My Chechen friends, the Vainakhy soldiers, they told me that they have chicken jaws in Dagestan and I believe them.
“Because I know a glass jaw when I see one. And I’ve seen this man wobbled many times. I’ve seen his brother sparked unconscious in another promotion.
“I know he is afraid of smack. And if you’re afraid of a smack off me, a smack will feel like a double-barrelled shotgun. So I believe inside the first. But, I have been wrong before. I will be prepared for five rounds.”
McGregor is confident he’ll end Nurmagomedov’s reign at the summit of the division and has insisted his opponent has bitten off more than he can chew.
He said: “He’s in over his head. I’m going to pick him apart and bully him in there and absolutely maul him.”
Nurmagomedov doesn’t foresee the biggest fight of his career panning out that way and believes the fight will end by him making McGregor tap.
“I think I’m going to make him tired and afterward play with him,” the Dagestan native said. “Because when he’s tired he’s always gives up. He moved to boxing and he tapped there.”
After McGregor interjected for the umpteenth time, Nurmagomedov added: “You tapped three times. Three times he tapped.
“You tapped four times, you tapped like chicken four times.”
McGregor’s showdown with the undefeated Nurmagomedov will be his first MMA bout since he claimed the lightweight title in the main event of UFC 205, where he became the promotion’s first simultaneous two-weight world champion.
He was relieved of the title in April due to inactivity, which paved the way for Nurmagomedov to replace him at the summit of the division at UFC 223.
The Dagestan native hasn’t fought since becoming the new ruler of the 155lbs division, a feat he achieved by defeat last-minute replacement. Al Iaquinta.
