Charli XCX and former Vampire Weekend member Rostam Batmanglij teamed for a spaced-out reworking of Jim-E Stack’s recent single, “Deadstream.”
The track premiered on Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 radio show and finds Charli XCX and Rostam crooning heartbroken verses over an ethereal dance groove rattled by jittery percussion. That off-kilter sensation is intensified by layers of effects soaking the pair’s vocals, which coalesce in blissed-out fragility as they sing, “Why do I have to let you go?”
Prior to their remix of “Deadstream,” the duo worked together on Charli XCX’s Sucker track “Need Ur Luv.” In February, Charli XCX followed up her 2014 LP with Vroom Vroom, an EP made with PC Music producer Sophie. Last month, the British singer released a collaboration with Atlanta MC Lil Yachty, “After the Afterparty,” the first single off her upcoming third LP.
As for Rostam, the musician has been busy since announcing his departure from Vampire Weekend in January. Along with production work on releases from Santigold, Frank Ocean and Solange, he’s released a handful of solo cuts and a collaborative album with the Walkmen’s Hamilton Leithauser, I Had a Dream That You Were Mine.
