Justin Timberlake has unveiled his new single, “Can’t Stop the Feeling,” the pop star’s first new song since 2013.
The sunny song, which arrived a few minutes after midnight, has the potential for being a contender for the song of the summer. In the video he released with the song, he’s in the studio with his fellow cast members from Dreamworks’ forthcoming film, Trolls (including Anna Kendrick, James Corden, Kunal Nayyar, Gwen Stefani and Icona Pop). He was tapped to pen and perform new songs for the animated movie and he will additionally voice the character Branch. The film is scheduled to open on November 4th.
“I got that sunshine in my pocket, got that good soul in my feet,” he sings.”I feel that hot blood in my body, when it drops, ooh! I can’t take my eyes up off it.”
“So don’t stop / Under the lights when everything goes / Nowhere to hide when I’m getting you close / When we move you well already know, so just imagine / Nothing I can see but you when you dance, dance, dance,” the song beckons. “Can’t stop the feeling, so just dance, dance, dance.”
Timberlake first teased “Can’t Stop the Feeling” Wednesday night. The track marks a comparatively quick turn around for the singer, who famously took seven years between his 2006 LP, FutureSex/LoveSounds, and 2013’s two-part, The 20/20 Experience.
On Thursday, leading up to the song’s release, Timberlake teased the song on Twitter, posting numerous GIFs of himself and others dancing in a studio. He also shared a snippet of the song as a “first listen,” which turned out to be culled from the video above that also featured the cast members getting their groove on to the song.
While he had recently hinted at a potential country direction, posting a photo of himself working with Little Big Town, the bouncy track is more indicative of his pop work, which he has also alluded to in recent social media posts. About a month ago, he posted a different photo on Instagram of himself in the studio with Pharrell Williams, whom he hasn’t worked with since his 2002 solo debut, Justified (produced almost entirely by the Neptunes).
Last month, Timberlake presented the Best Tour gong to Taylor Swift during the 2016 iHeartRadio Music Awards and after Prince passed away, Timberlake penned a heartfelt tribute.
