Richard Bacon and Giles Coren had a bizarre spat over the NHS
Former Blue Peter presenter Richard, 42, was placed in a medically-induced coma after falling ill on a flight from the US and credited NHS staff at Lewisham hospital for saving his life.
And after watching Mark Thomas’ show Check Up: Our NHS At 70, at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Richard shared a video on Instagram, captioning it: “You don’t have to have had your life saved by them in the last month to think this is standing ovation sensational…”
But this prompted food writer Giles, to comment under the post: “Your life was saved by medical science. I don’t see what the NHS has to do with it.”
Richard hit back sarcastically: “I should have gone to that private A&E 5 minutes from the house… Wish I’d thought of going to those places that don’t exist as I was dying.”
Yet adamant Giles, 49, insisted: “The NHS is just the organising structure, though. The science is what saved you…”
Richard then explained: “There was one individual called Vic, who’s committed himself to public healthcare, to the NHS, who made a crucial decision… There is no guarantee that without him I would have survived.”
However Giles said Richard was “politicising it in terms that a snowflake social media fan base will rise and applaud to…”
Last word from Richard: “You’re the one f******* politicising it…don’t know why you’re being pointlessly provocative.” Miaow!
James Corden and Ariana Grande performed an impressive Titanic sketch
James Corden and Ariana Grande performed a rather impressive Titanic themed sketch on his Late Late Show – singing 13 songs in five minutes in just one take.
Pop star Ariana, 25, naturally wowed the audience with her ability to hold a note but British host James, 39, showed he’s also more than capable of singing like a professional.
“This was one of the most amazing things I’ve seen on TV,” tweeted one viewer.
“Please can we have James and Ariana cast in a remake!” said another.
The pair’s song selection included Just Dance by Lady Gaga and Ed Sheeran’s Shape Of You, while Ariana capped off the performance by belting out Celine Dion’s film theme tune My Heart Will Go On.
Getting set to star in a saucy stage production, Fern Britton says she’s absolutely fearless since turning 60.
Next week the TV presenter makes her stage debut in Gary Barlow’s hit musical Calendar Girls and says: “I feel great about doing something completely different at the age of 61….
What have you got to be scared of if you are over 60? Nothing, except dying. So we may as well have a nice time before we’re dead… I just think, ‘For goodness sake, you’re old enough! It doesn’t matter any more. Just do it and enjoy it,’ which is why I said yes to the challenge.”
Fern’s co-stars in the comedy, based on the true story of a group of women who appear nude for a Women’s Institute calendar, include, Hi-de-Hi actress Ruth Madoc and former Loose Woman Denise Welch.

Youtube star Joe Sugg will take part in Strictly Come Dancing this year
We’re certainly not suggesting they’re running out of options on Strictly … but the latest contestant has been confirmed as an, erm, 26-year-old YouTube “star” whose biggest claim to fame seems to be having 25 million followers on social media.
Joe Sugg, nicknamed Thatcher Joe, owing to his training as a roof thatcher rather than any political persuasion, is the younger brother of fellow YouTube “star” Zoella, 28, who is another “internet celebrity”.
Speaking of his imminent Strictly stint he says: “My knowledge of dance isn’t the best so I’m just going to go into it completely openminded.”
And of his show makeover, the man who stands a not too far off 5ft 7in tall, adds: “I do feel pretty nervous about it.
I just hope they have child sizes as I’m tiny!”
As one of the few celebrities to refreshingly shun social media, notoriously outspoken Paul O’Grady reckons he’d soon be nabbed by the long arm of the law were that not the case.
“I’d probably be arrested if I was on Twitter! I’d come in one night, having had a few skinfuls, and I’d go for those trolls all guns a blazing,” the 63-year-old Blind Date host tells Day & Night. “I’ve got enough to do. I don’t want to live vicariously through other people.”
While he thinks we’ve come full circle on the social media front anyway, he tells of two teenagers recently praising him for not having an online profile.
“I was outside Radio 2 and there were two kids about 16. They went to me, ‘You’re not on Twitter are you?’ I went, ‘No’. They went, ‘That’s really cool’.”
