Snoop Dogg slammed the new Roots miniseries, which premieres Monday night on The History Channel, and called upon his fans to boycott the four-part series based on Alex Haley’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel.
“I’m sick of this shit. How the fuck are they going to put Roots on, on Memorial Day?” the rapper said of the remake in a video posted on Instagram. “They going to just to keep beating that shit into our heads about how they did us, huh?”
Snoop Dogg added that he doesn’t watch any films or TV series that deal with the subject of slavery – including 12 Years a Slave, which won Best Picture at the Academy Awards in 2014 – because they “keep showing the abuse we took hundreds and hundreds of years ago,” The Hollywood Reporter reports.
“I ain’t watching that shit, and I advise you motherfuckers as real niggas like myself; fuck them television shows,” the rapper added. “Let’s create our own shit based on today, how we live and how we inspire people today. Black is what’s real. Fuck that old shit.”
Snoop Dogg followed up his Roots video by sharing and agreeing with Big Boi’s controversial Florida Evans meme.
The Roots remake stars Malachi Kirby as Kunta Kinte plus Forest Whitaker, Anna Paquin and T.I., who Snoop Dogg briefly beefed with after the Long Beach rapper dissed Tip’s then-protégé Iggy Azalea; Snoop later revealed that he apologized to Azalea only after T.I. called and asked him to.
In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, T.I. said that works like Roots help embody the idea of historical justice. “The quest for truth should be a lifelong journey,” T.I. said. “From the time you’re born to the time you die, you’re supposed to be seeking knowledge and truth. This is a piece of it. This is a huge, huge chapter, so I think it’s incredibly important.”
