UNAI EMERY APPOINTED LIVE UPDATES
It’s a big challenge for me but I work also on other big projects. For me I am proud to be here and to work after Arsene Wenger.
The first meeting, for me very important was the connection at this moment. We spoke in this moment about who they want, and how I want to work.
This responsability at this club, together, to know my ambition and my passion. To know how I want to develop my project at Arsenal. The project was a bigresponsability
but I think this feeling is very important.
“I know all the players. I think all the players are very important,” he said.
“All the players I want to speak to individually. I want to speak to them face to face.”
And on Jack Wilshere he said: “I don’t want to speak about individual players today.”
Thank you Kroenke family, for me it was a very good meeting, a very good conversation.
Thank you also to the chairman, the board. We had a meeting Monday morning and I feel they feel, with their heart, Arsenal.
We met with London members of the board on Monday. Unai, Raul and I flew to Atlanta on Monday to meet Stan Kroenke.
I’ve followed Unai since his Valencia days. He has always been on my radar. He is a superb fit to the criteria that I laid out.
The thing that distinguished Unai above all the things was the chemistry between us and the feel for football within the room.
We formed a three person committee – led by me and supported by Sven Mislintat and Raul Sanllehi.
We had clear criteria that we were looking for. Entertaining football, values and developing young players.
We created an eight person list. All eight took part in extensive interviews with the three of us and none of them withdrew their interest.
We were in the fortunate position to be able to make our choice.
We interviewed Unai on May 10. We made our recommendation to the board in May 10 – that was an unanimous recommendation.
Unai Emery has been appointed as the new Arsenal manager
Emery has been confirmed as Arsene Wenger’s successor at the Emirates and will lead the club into a new era.
The former PSG boss will be presented at 2pm today but has already been speaking to the Arsenal website.
His appointment has been endorsed by Stan Kroenke and Ivan Gazidis.
Emery beat Mikel Arteta to the job and joins after two years at PSG, where he won the domestic treble in his final season, but was unable to get them beyond the last-16 of the Champions League.
Emery will have a tall order at Arsenal with the team needing overhauling after missing out on Champions League football two seasons in a row.
Unai Emery has been appointed as the new Arsenal manager
He says Unai Emery is the perfect fit for Arsenal.
“I’m really delighted and excited to announce the new head coach of Arsenal football club and it is Unai Emery,” he said.
“I know that came as a bit of a surprise and perhaps one or two rewrites were necessary.
“But as I said at the beginning of the process – those who know, won’t speak and those who speak, won’t know.”
Unai Emery is being presented to the media having been appointed Arsenal boss this morning.
Express Sport will bring you the quptes live.
Ian Wright has performed a U-turn and now insists he is happy with the appointment of Unai Emery.
Wright had previously slammed the selection process and compared it to picking sushi.
But now he’s had time to think it through he reckons it will be a good appointment.
“I am very pleased with that,” said Wright.
“Obviously it came as a bit of a shock, because everyone was getting ready to digest (Man City assistant) Mikel Arteta, even though he is inexperienced at the level we are going to need.
“But – Unai Emery – I am very happy with that. We have got someone who is credible enough to take us to the next step.
“Arsenal fans are happy with it from what I have seen so far.
“Now we need to get our players with a different mindset from what they have had in recent years.”
Pep Guardiola has been speaking about Arsenal’s appointment.
He said: “His career speaks for itself, [he] did it perfect in Spain with many teams; Valencia & Sevilla, and did it really well in France.
“Welcome to England, another good manager is coming here.”
William Gallas admits he’s surprised Arsenal went for Emery.
The former PSG boss has been handed the reins to replace Arsene Wenger at the Emirates.
But Gallas thinks they should have spoken to Patrick Vieira or Thierry Henry.
Gallas said: “I’m a little bit surprised that Unai Emery will be the manager.
“I expected to see the former legend players like Patrick Vieira or Thierry Henry and, personally, I didn’t understand why they didn’t speak to them and offer them that job, because they did a lot for that club.”
Unai Emery has penned a four-year deal worth £6m a season.
That comes in around £2m less than Arsene Wenger’s final salary and marks the beginning of Arsenal’s budget cutting.
Arsenal are expected to move players on this summer with FFP regulations to meet.
Hector Bellerin and Aaron Ramsey have been linked with move although Emery is said to want to build his midfield around the Wales star.

Unai Emery replaces Arsene Wenger as the new Arsenal manager
Football runs in the family
Emery followed his family blood line into the game – both his father and grandfather, named Juan and Antonio respectively, were goalkeepers. The former appeared for several clubs in the Spanish second tier, whilst the latter competed with Real Union in the top division and his uncle Roman played as a midfielder.
Injury calls for managerial role
Emery’s first managerial post was at former Spanish third-tier side Lorca Deportiva, with whom he made more than 30 appearances as a midfielder before succumbing to a knee injury aged 32 in the 2004-05 season and being offered the coaching job. He led them to promotion and from there he moved on to a four-year spell in charge of Valencia, taking Los Che to European qualification in each season before a short stint holding the reins at Spartak Moscow in 2012.
During his spell in charge of Sevilla, Emery received a nomination for the FIFA Best Coach Award in 2015 – after a fifth-placed finish in LaLiga – but eventually lost out to then Barcelona boss Luis Enrique. He collected gongs for European Coach of the Season in 2013-14 and multiple LaLiga Manager of the Month awards at Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan, while more recently he was awarded the the Trophees UNFP du football, top manager prize at Paris St Germain.
Benfica, Dnipro and Liverpool were the teams beaten by Sevilla in Europa League finals between 2014 and 2016. The Portuguese giants were defeated 4-2 on penalties after a goalless draw in 2014, before Ukraine’s Dnipro were downed 3-2 the following year. The hat-trick was completed with a 3-1 come-from-behind win over Liverpool in Basel two years ago.
Emery is not the only sporting son from the Basque town of Hondarribia – golfer Jose Maria Olazabal, Masters winner in 1994 and 1999, also hails from there.
What does Unai Emery have to do now he’s in the door at Arsenal?
Here are the four things he must solve at the Emirates.
Unai Emery: Four major issues to resolve
Stan Kroenke has given the appointment his seal of approval.
He said: “We’re delighted to welcome Unai to Arsenal. He’s a proven winner. We’re confident that he is the right person for the job and that he will work to deliver the triumphs our fans, staff and everyone who cares about Arsenal want.
“Several things stood out during his interview and the entire process; his football knowledge, energy, determination and love of the game. His familiarity with our club and our players, the Premier League and the game in Europe were all very impressive.
“He shares our vision to move forward, to build on the platform created by Arsène Wenger and help this club enjoy greater success.”
Ivan Gazidis insists he is the right man for the role.
He said: “Unai has an outstanding track record of success throughout his career, has developed some of the best young talent in Europe and plays an exciting, progressive style of football that fits Arsenal perfectly.
“His hard-working and passionate approach and his sense of values on and off the pitch make him the ideal person to take us forward.
“We conducted a confidential, wide-ranging and rigorous search involving extensive background references, data and video analysis, and personal meetings with all the candidates we shortlisted.
“All were interested in the position and we were unanimous in our choice of Unai to drive the next chapter of our history.”
